Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctor | Performance Specialist

Dr. Robert Kempers

Dr. Robert Kempers is a consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine with over 15 years of experience treating musculoskeletal conditions and guiding athletes and active individuals toward better movement and long-term recovery. He specialises in issues ranging from neck, shoulder, and back pain to hip, knee, and foot problems, always working with the body’s natural capacity to heal through movement.

With academic backgrounds in both Biomedical Health Science and Physical Therapy, Robert has a deep understanding of the mechanics of human movement. As a former elite triathlete, he brings firsthand insight into endurance sport, training loads, and recovery. His philosophy is simple: exercise is medicine, and the key to recovery often lies in restoring natural movement patterns, not suppressing them.

Robert has over 15 years of experience in elite cycling as a team doctor. He served as Chief Medical Officer for the Dutch National Cycling Federation until the end of 2023, supporting athletes at three Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2021), as well as the European Games in Baku and Minsk. He was also medical coordinator for Team Jumbo-Visma Women until early 2023. Since 2024, he has joined the INEOS Grenadiers professional cycling team as a Sports Medicine Doctor.

Alongside clinical work, Robert is involved in ongoing research on bone health and energy availability in young and elite cyclists, with a focus on relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S). He continues to champion evidence-based practice in athlete health and sustainable performance.

Outside of work, you’ll find Robert on a bike, out for a run, or enjoying the outdoors—living the same active lifestyle he encourages in others.

Craig is a Sports Podiatrist with over 25 years experience in Australia and the Middle East.
Craig has worked with athletes of all levels and ages and was fortunate to work directly with elite Australian Rules football players, national and international level basketball players and top ranked tennis players. His clinical work allowed him to introduce a fully digital workflow incorporating 3D laser scanning, fully digital design, and locally 3D-printed foot orthoses—still maintaining 100% design control. The ability to produce specific custom orthoses in a short period led to him working again with visiting elite international athletes, as well as with a wide range of local athletes of all ages and levels from the burgeoning recreational community.

Working at RU Active is an opportunity to concentrate on what he enjoys most- helping patients as part of a high quality Sports and Exercise Medicine team.

Away from the clinic, he is a keen cyclist and can often be seen on the track at Al Qudra on the weekend. He is an occasional runner and was a Surf Lifesaver in a previous life. He enjoys family time with his wife and 2 teenagers, likes to BBQ, tell Dad jokes and look after his lawn!

Questions

Things worth knowing.

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often. Still unsure? Drop us a message — we’ll happily talk you through it.

Physiotherapy tends to focus on specific injuries with progressive loading and exercise; osteopathy takes a more whole-body, structural view, often using gentle hands-on techniques to restore mobility. We frequently use both depending on the case.

No referral needed. Physiotherapy, osteopathy and podiatry are all primary-contact services in the UAE — you can book directly with us.

Yes — we work with most major UAE insurance providers. Coverage varies by plan and discipline; we recommend checking your benefits with your insurer or our reception team before your first visit.

Initial consultations are 60 minutes to allow for thorough assessment and treatment. Follow-ups are typically 30–45 minutes. Custom orthotics fitting takes a separate dedicated appointment.

We start with a comprehensive biomechanical assessment — gait analysis, foot scan, and clinical examination. The insoles are then fabricated to your specific measurements and prescription, and fitted at a follow-up appointment.

Absolutely — and many patients do. Our team coordinates between physiotherapy, osteopathy, and podiatry so your treatment is connected, not fragmented.

Comfortable clothing you can move easily in — shorts or leggings are ideal. For podiatry appointments, please bring the shoes you wear most often, including any sports shoes if relevant.

Ready when you are
